Breastfeeding: Waking Your Baby

Overview

Most medical professionals recommend letting a baby eat on demand. But during the first few days of breastfeeding, your baby will need to breastfeed at least 8 times in a 24-hour period. This means you may need to wake your baby to eat. This will help to get your milk supply going. Try these tips to make the transition from sleep gradual and comfortable.

  • Cool your baby by taking off your baby's clothes. Have skin-to-skin contact with your baby as you place your baby for feeding. Keep a lightweight blanket nearby.
  • Tickle your baby lightly wherever you get a reaction. This may be on the feet, neck, top of the head, or stomach.
  • Change your baby's diaper.
